Growing up in a conservative, church-going household in West Virginia,Tyler found meaning in his family and his church. When Tyler started to come to terms with his gay identity, he started to become isolated from his community. Tyler reached out to The Trevor Project, where he found support and encouragement from counselors. Encouraged by his mom’s unwavering love, Tyler came out to his community and became an advocate for LGBTQ+ equality, eventually moving to New York and becoming a high school organizer and now as an intern on Capitol Hill.

A Landmark Transgender Discrimination Case at the Supreme Court

To date, nearly half of all states (24) in the U.S. have banned essential health care for transgender young people. For the first time, the Supreme Court will hear a challenge to one of these bans. On December 4, 2024, the Supreme Court of the United States will hear arguments in U.S. v. Skrmetti on whether it is illegal discrimination for Tennessee to ban certain medications for transgender youth that they allow for all other young people. Trevor’s 25th year marks another important milestone: the introduction of our organization’s values. Our mission to create a brighter future starts with how we operate as an organization, and how we show up — day after day — to defend and protect the potential of LGBTQ young people.
