New Documentary Short Highlights Conversion Therapy Survivor Stories as Supreme Court Considers Decision on State Protections

The Trevor Project’s third episode in the roundtable docuseries, “Sharing Space,” features a moderated discussion between six survivors of conversion therapy

January 27, 2026 – Today, The Trevor Project, the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ young people, released the third episode of “Sharing Space,” a documentary-style roundtable series that features conversations with and about LGBTQ+ young people, moderated by supportive adults and allies. This episode features six LGBTQ+ individuals who have been subjected to the dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy, and is moderated by a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist. 

While more than 20 states in the U.S. currently have laws enacted to protect LGBTQ+ young people from conversion therapy practices, the Supreme Court of the United States is currently considering a challenge to Colorado’s state ban in the case, Chiles v. Salazar. While the decision is pending, the outcome could impact state laws that protect LGBTQ+ youth from these debunked practices nationwide.

This episode of “Sharing Space” amplifies the stories of six people impacted by these practices and provides audiences with raw, first-hand accounts of what it is like to be subjected to conversion therapy. 

“I’m not broken. I’m not fixed. I’m just different. Conversion therapy did not do anything to get rid of my transness. It made me feel super ashamed. It made me depressed. It sent me into clinical depression and years of anti-depressants and suicidality,” Dr. Bobbie Glass shared about her own experience being subjected to conversion therapy practices in the episode. “There’s a whole lot of stuff that I still work on to this day, and one of the biggest ones for me right now is [unlearning] that ‘people like me don’t deserve to be happy.’ And I am living this life that is just full of abundance. And it’s like, oh my God, I’m going to be happier than anybody I know.”

Research consistently shows that conversion therapy is associated with an extensive list of negative mental health outcomes. In particular, LGBTQ+ youth who experienced conversion therapy were more than twice as likely to attempt suicide and more than 2.5 times as likely to report multiple suicide attempts in the past year. While many believe that conversion therapy is a relic of the past, these practices remain prevalent in communities across the U.S. today. The Trevor Project’s most recent study found that conversion therapy is on the rise: After one year of following a cohort of nearly 1,700 LGBTQ+ youth, reports of being threatened with conversion therapy doubled from 11% to 22%, and exposure to these practices climbed from 9% to 15%.

“The Trevor Project has been a leading voice in the fight to end conversion therapy in the United States for years. We know that sadly, right now, these dangerous practices are making a resurgence,” said Nolan Scott, Senior Director of Marketing and Content at The Trevor Project. “Too often, political debates and news stories about this topic fail to include the LGBTQ+ people who have been subjected to conversion therapy. Our goal with this episode is to show the real people, and share the real stories, behind the headlines and government actions – and illustrate the devastating toll that conversion therapy takes on young people and their families.”
